Last year I was invited to come and photograph a private performance by Peter Himmelman in Belgravia. All I knew was that it was to be a small affair for members of a synagogue, and had no idea that their Rabbi was an accomplished musician himself and would be joining in on vocals and bongos!

Peter’s performance was warm and soulful, taking time between each song to tell stories from his life experiences that informed the next song and had something to say to us all about life and its many ups and downs. I tried to capture some of that sensitivity with a few shots that feel a little quieter and more reflective.

I turned in my photography of both the ceremony beforehand and the performance itself in colour but looking back at them now my favourites felt like they would make a striking set of inky black and whites so I went back to the RAW files and processed Virtual Copies in Lightroom. I particularly love the tight shot of Peter’s eyes in shadow under the brim of his trademark hat. It’s a little soft and blurry, but it was caught in the moment and I think that’s what matters most.

Let me know what you think in the comments, and thanks for stopping by. You can find out more about my event photography here.
