If you’re a fan of Forrest Gump and seafood and live near London, then boy are you in for a treat: Bubba Gump London is now open!
The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company is a themed restaurant based on the company Forrest set up in memory of his friend Bubba in the movie. Their first UK site is perfectly situated slap bang between London’s Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, and they invited me down to their launch party to do my documentary event photography thang
Technical aside: in a break from my usual Nikons-and-flashes style I went in with only a Fuji X100S and Fuji XT1 (with 18-55 and 56 f/1.2) shooting in just ambient light. No Nikon cameras and lenses swinging around and getting in the way, I absolutely loved it! And taking a tip from X-Shooter Kevin Mullins although I shot RAW+JPG I’ve only used the JPGs – tweaked here and there, but man I love those Fuji colours. If only Fuji would back off on the NR on skin, even when it’s set to -2…
Getting back on topic, I had a fantastic time at Bubba Gump’s – this was just my sort of thing to shoot: loads of hustle and bustle behind the scenes, especially with the natural stress and excitement of opening night, and just as many happy people having a great time ‘out front’. I even got a special guided tour by the executive chef right into the heart of his hot, busy kitchen at the peak of opening night orders!
