Frequently asked questions
How much does photography cost?
The $640,000 question! Honestly, every shoot is different so you'll get the most realistic quote directly from me - use my contact form and I'll usually get back to you the same day. If I'm over budget but you love my work it can be helpful to let me know what you're working with in case I can make it fit.
Is editing included?
All quotes include a basic round of editing to correct for colour, tone, and exposure, and that's all most images need. Headshots include professional retouching so it looks like you on a good day, avoiding heavy skin smoothing etc. Re-editing can be requested, typically charged as an extra depending on the details.
Is travel included?
All quotes include a travel fee to and from your location. For most London shoots I'll use public transport if possible. If I need to drive or take a taxi the fee covers fares, parking, Congestion Charge, etc. Outside of London the fee is based on time and mileage, subject to additional expenses on the day.
How many edited photographs do we get?
For events there's usually around 60-80 photos per hour of shooting, depending on guest numbers, venue size, schedule, etc. For PR commissions I'll provide enough edited photographs to meet the brief. For headshots just let me know what you need.
How can we use the photographs?
Every quote includes unlimited personal use, in-house use, credited editorial use, and organic PR use. Dedicated PR shoots usually add advertising licensing in all media. If you need anything else just ask.
As per UK copyright law I retain the copyright in my work, and clients are licensed to use the images however they need, so you only pay for what you need. Full buyout is available at a significant markup, but rarely needed.
When do we get the photos back?
Usually within 2-3 days, Monday to Friday. Often it's the day after the shoot if I'm available to edit, but that's not guaranteed unless we book a priority editing slot. If all you need is a few key images quickly and the rest later I can usually do that for you at no extra cost - just let me know when you're booking so I can prep in advance.
Can we get the raw files to edit ourselves?
I usually deliver edited, high-resolution JPG files, and generally don't provide the unedited raw files. If you need access to them for a project-driven purpose let me know and we can discuss the options available.
How do we book and pay?
For new clients I'll send a booking page that includes a quote, a brief questionnaire, and a booking agreement we'll both sign. New clients booking more than 8 weeks in advance may also be asked to pay a non-refundable reservation fee upfront, deducted from the balance.
For regular clients I can usually book you in manually once we've agreed the details by email. Payment is via bank transfer (BACS) within 30 days, and you'll receive a receipt by email.
Do you provide videography, photo booths, or on-site printing?
I don't provide these services myself but for booked clients I may be able to recommend suppliers I've worked with.
However, for small events I do offer a simple 'vox pops' video service delivering uncut video clips of 1+1 or 1+2 on-the-spot interviews, either graded or LOG, for your own team to work up; I provide the camera and sound, you provide the interviewer and guests.
Who will our photographer be?
At least 95% of the time it'll be me - Owen! If I'm not available for your date when you get in touch then I work with a small group of excellent associate photographers who fill in for me with regular clients, or who I'm happy to recommend to new clients. You'll always know who you're booking.
Do you offer discounts for charities and NFPs?
I have an annual allowance for charities that have impacted my family directly, and beyond that I don't officially offer discounts. If the budget's especially tight and it's for a good cause please do let me know how much you're working with and I'll make the best offer I can.
What if we need to cancel or postpone?
This is handled on a case-by-case basis. Cancellation fees may be payable depending on the shoot and the notice given.
Do you photograph weddings?
Yes! I dedicate time for up to six full day weddings a year, in London and around the UK. I also shoot unlimited small London weddings, at venues like Old Marylebone Town Hall, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Morden Park House, and York House. Check out my wedding photography website for galleries and lots more info about how it all works.
