Respectful documentary images to commemorate an important day.

Speaking from experience, a funeral is an upsetting occasion you probably don't want to remember. But a few sensitive photos can be valuable to have, to commemorate details of the service in your own time. And during COVID-19 we have even less time with our thoughts on the day, plus the added stress of social distancing to consider, making it even more important to have a documentary record for your family to look back on when they're ready.

Why have a photographer at the funeral?

My work is usually about capturing happy memories, and I know that funerals are far from happy occasions so it might seem like an odd service to offer. A couple of weeks after my gran’s funeral, my mum told me she’d been so emotionally exhausted she could barely remember what my gran’s beautiful wicker coffin even looked like, let alone other details like the flowers, or even who’d been there. My photos capture those details, discretely and respectfully.

How would it work on the day? Do we have to pose?

I’m with you for as long as you need, from arrival through to the wake if you’d like it. However, during COVID-19 funerals have to be as simple as possible so usually 30-45 minutes is plenty. Please, don’t pose. Just forget I’m there. I work with one small, quiet camera and a wide lens to document as many details as possible in each image. And most importantly, I don’t focus on individuals so nobody need feel self-conscious as they grieve.

How much would it cost, and what's included?

During COVID-19, a funeral photography fee of £195 includes a chat on the phone or by email to discuss the details, 30-45 minutes of funeral photography in central or SW London, travel expenses, an online gallery with around 20-30 finished images, and a full set of digitals to download and keep.
